It’s been a year since I published anything.
It’s okay, though, I needed a break. But I am glad to be back in gear again – NaNoWriMo helped with that. It’s my sincere hope that I’ll have a new novel out for you by Christmas…though time is getting short!
This novel has actually been a really long time coming. I first conceived it in November 2009, and felt a compelling drive to write and release it. I truly felt that I had to write this book – that I could not move on with my career until I did. So, I committed to the project, and then spent a couple of years (on and off) researching, because it was my first historical fiction, and I wanted to get it right.
I am pleased to say that I have become very well acquainted with the world of ancient Israel (Jerusalem and environs, about 2,000 years ago). I immersed myself in the culture and a deep study of the records of the time, and how we got those records. Fascinating, educational, enlightening.
I then wrote the book in a couple of short bursts, finishing the actual writing relatively quickly (much of it being completed in the 2012 NaNoWriMo, actually). I then handed off the manuscript to three of my trusted first readers. The first two got back to me in a timely manner. The third (my lovely wife, who I can count on for brutally honest feedback and great ideas) took rather longer – it can be really hard to get an appointment with her!
We finally got through the feedback session this past weekend, and I’m making final edits now. I’m also completing the appendix portion of the book.
I hope to get the cover designed this week by a professional with whom I work (using photography I custom-shot last December), and then go through the publishing process this weekend.
Look for JOSEPH OF NAZARETH in time for Christmas – it should be great timing, since the first Christmas is an important part of this story!
Jerusalem, part of the setting for my new novel!
